"Getting dressed is a whole thing for me. My closet is organized by tops, pants, and outerwear, but not a lot of dresses. Like most designers, I have a uniform, and mine is a legging. And if it's not a legging, it's a pant that's like a legging. They could be from Balenciaga or Givenchy, or from Danskin or my Kohl's line. Then I throw on a T-shirt. After that I'm a complete outerwear freak. I work very hard to look casual. It's deliberate to look like you didn't try too hard, as my old boss Ralph Lauren would say."

check out these two short and illuminating interviews by The New York Times and Style.com on VW's studio and style:
on a related note, perhaps due to all the snow days and inspired by VW, i've been wearing my favorite leggings (TTS with plenty of stretch, i went with the XS) with pretty much everything since the holidays.
what's your current wardrobe go-to right now?
No to leggings unless they are pants with lot of strech. I really hope that is what she wears and not yoga ready leggings. I live on university and most kids make me want to close my eyes/look away.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, my fav are Citizens of Humanity Avedon Skinny jeans ( leggings in my book ). They are faithful and never give me away.
ha! i am in favor of leggings styled properly :)
DeleteLeggings = underwear in my book :)
ReplyDeleteThat said, I like the consistency of her look. I have been living in layers - thermals + Black Crane flannel dresses + wool tights topped with my Carven coat and a huge embroidered shawl from Pakistan.
i think layered properly leggings are fine :D love your current ensemble.
DeleteI think as long as the bum is covered and they are not see thru, leggings are perfectly acceptable. That being said, I wear J Crew's Pixie pants 3-4 times a week. They are an office appropriate compromise between a legging and a pant. Then I throw on an oversized sweater or button-down+chunky cardigan combo...and finish with an oversized scarf :)
ReplyDeleteyes exactly! i have the pixie pants from a number of years ago too. they're great!
DeleteLove that headshot of her. It gives me hope! Maybe I'll be an elegant lady with long black hair like Vera Wang when I grow up :)
ReplyDeleteMy uniform at the moment is maybe a little bit unfortunate? Black heeled boots, thick black leggings, an oversized knit sweater, tuque, knee-length coat ... very winter and boring? I didn't use to be a leggings fan, but since discovering the joys of Splendid's terrycloth leggings I am 100% converted - bum covered, of course!
ReplyDeleteplease talk to me about the Splendid leggings! I love the idea of the little mini skirt addition; I wonder if I could do yoga in these?
ReplyDeleteJackie - you probably could! the foldover detail is pretty genius for adding just enough coverage for everyday wear. it's also great layered under other tees / tanks / tunics. :)
DeleteVera...talk about class and confidence. If leggings are good for Vera, they're good for me! Ammu, try leggings under the Black Crane dress with a pair of booties. Could be cute!
ReplyDeleteI really admire her style, it's unique and really suits her. Personally I would never wear leggings because they simply do not suit me but on others they can look fantastic. In general, as I have no sporty links at all, feel a fraud for wearing anything related to sport even trainers unlike Vera who really was a sportswoman and looks like has kept her form regardless. Have to say I prefer the videos to her photo that looks photoshopped to oblivian.
ReplyDeleteThis Winter I've been in love with my cashmeres in clothing and accessories.
Leggings (skinny jeans if I'm feeling really ambitious), OTK boots (or ankle if it's north of 35 degrees), bum covering sweater or dress, faux-fur lined utility parka, scarf, beanie. Every day until the weather warms up. I am an urban yoga mom cliché and I don't care.
ReplyDelete"i am an urban yoga mom cliche and i don't care" - ha! i can get behind sticking to a uniform that works ;)
DeleteI like to wear those slightly obnoxious Nike leg-a-see leggings with the oversized logo under my snowboarding pants, so if I have to be somewhere afterward I just thrown on a giant sweater or something and pretend I'm 'sporty chic'. It's gotten so comfortable that it's hard for me not to reach for those leggings when I'm not snowboarding! I feel like as long as your butt is covered it's OK to wear leggings as pants? That's my rule anyway... Need to add those vids to my ever expanding 'list of things to watch when I have time'!
