#askLAM: the best slouchy black pants?

readers often write or comment with questions on finding a particular piece or a wardrobe recommendation. starting this month, i'll be doing a regular mini-series titled #askLAM. hopefully you'll find this to be a useful and fun regular feature :)

first up, Sara asks:

Can you recommend some soft pants (e.g. not jeans) that aren't sweatpants and that might work for fall? This last week I keep reaching for something like that in my closet, but it doesn't exist. You were the first person I thought to ask.

i really like these slouchy Black Crane cotton pants in black (also in navy). BC's off-duty chic designs are perfect now that we're in the midst of chilly mid-autumn. as always, i'm a big fan of designers who understand and appreciate the importance of natural fibers and quality textiles. yes to comfy and coolly textured basics!

what do you think? do you have anything by Black Crane?

if you have a style-related question, send me an email (or tag #askLAM on twitter/instagram.)

  1. Thanks for answering my question! I really appreciate it. And, I swear I'm not making this up, but this morning because I was going to be working from home, and I like to wear something comfortable that isn't sloppy, this question ran through my head again. I love Black Crane. These are perfect.

  2. Love Black Crane - since picking up a couple of their painter dresses, I haven't wanted to wear anything else. Especially love the fact that their clothing is so low-maintenance. These pants look great - however I am wary of buying trousers online with a free international returns policy given how difficult it is to estimate fit without trying them on.

    1. that's so great to hear, Ammu! this is what everyone says about BC - i'm thinking of adding one or two of their quilted pieces to my wishlist this season...

  3. I love the whole ensemble, from shoes to hat! Could you tell me anything about their sizing? I've been scoping out their pieces on a few of my favorite sites, but none of them seem very specific when it comes to number equivalents to a Large. Thx, Miss Sophie!

    1. Mill Mercantile (http://www.millmercantile.com/Black_Crane_Quilt_Pant_in_Black_14400.html) has the best sizing chart I've seen for these pants. I tried on a small and a large a few weeks ago and found that the sizing was pretty much the same. The waist on the small fit me without being strained at all, and the large did as well without there being too much fabric. You'll see from the size chart that there's significant overlap in all the sizes. Maybe if your frame is really slight, there may be too much fabric in places.

Also, the pants are cut pretty slim through the thighs. Though I'm an ordinary size (roughly 29-30 in pants), I have really muscular thighs and butt courtesy of biking and bikram. The fabric in both the small and the large was taut across my thighs, and it ruined the drape of the pants. They looked rather terrible on me, so I passed. But the pants were otherwise lovely, and had they worked for my body type, I definitely would have bought them.

  5. I LOVE Black Crane - I have never invested so much in a single line's pieces in one season but I started with these quilted pants, then bought the carpenter pants, plain dress and painter's dress. I've been so happy with each piece - wonderful, comfortable materials and a great, flattering fit.

  6. My favorites by far are Hope's Time Trousers. I scored 2 used pairs nearly 3 years ago and they are year-round staples. Holding up beautifully despite heavy wear. I bought a pair of pants by Black Crane 2 years ago from Totokaelo, but they sag at the knees after just a few hours.

  7. I'm excited to see what else this feature has in store! I too love black crane, although unfortunately it's all too big so I have to appreciate from afar. (However I do have the wide dress - borderline muumuu in the summer, but I'm hoping with black leggings and boots it'll be a perfect fall/winter lazy day item)

  8. I got two pairs of the quilt pants about a month ago and I love them. I like that they aren't overtly saying "sweatpants" and the texture is really interesting and they work great for pretty much any occasion. Like Leanne mentioned though, they stretch out a lot after only an hours wear, especially in the knees and calves, so I usually only get one wear out of them before needing to wash. But super comfy and well made.
