foundations: big bag theory

in the bag (reviewed here): something old (7-year-old CdG wallet) // something inspiring (the power of habit) //
something new & something blue (large zip pouch c/o everlane)

my desk is usually messy, but i like to keep my bags organized.

last year, i wrote about using zip pouches of various sizes to keep a big bag from devolving into a black hole. so when the kind folks at everlane sent me the large structured pouch, i was pretty happy to find that it fits nicely inside my petra tote. it's a stylish sleeve for my 13" macbook, but i've also been using it as a bag divider of sorts – handy for stashing papers + files that would otherwise get crumpled (standard manila file folders fit perfectly), notebooks, and other odds and ends. it's also chic enough to double as an oversized clutch for a lunchtime meeting or an after-work event. i like that it's lined and there's a bit of padding that helps the pouch keep its structured shape.

i also use a muji nylon bag organizer to keep smaller essentials in one place (especially handy when you're switching bags). it may seem fussy at first, but over the years, i've found that it's the little 'optimizations' that really help streamline and take a bit of the stress out of the everyday.

do you like to keep things compartmentalized/organized, or do you just throw everything in?

  1. Nice photo. I'm insanely type A and an organization freak so I need my home, office, desk and bags to be well compartmentalized and organized. I always keep my laptop and ipad in sleeves. i'm working with an amazingly talented leather artisan on custom laptop and ipad sleeves. I can't wait until they're ready. I have designated pouches for beauty products, key cards etc. My favorite at the moment is a CdG burgundy pouch. I also like to carry a small clutch in my larger work bag for running downstairs at meetings or evening events. Organization makes switching bags so much easier.

I just realized that I left Japan recommendations last week for you, but they didn't show up in the comments section. Feel free to email me for suggestions.

  2. Hmmm, now that you mention that standard manila folders fit perfectly in the Everlane pouch, I'm rethinking them...Even though 99% of my work is on my laptop, I still like having papers around, so that might be the organizational solution I'm looking for.

    1. i'm the same way! i had been using those clear plastic folios to keep my papers in my bag, but they were always too floppy to stay upright. i think the structured pouch is the perfect multi-function piece :)

  3. I depend a lot on my pouches - most of my bags come with leather pouches so I have built up a good collection. For make-up, I use Muji pouches because they are easier to clean in the event of accidents.

  4. I just love this post! I totally compartmentalize my bag... or I would never find anything!

  5. I keep maybe one pouch in my bag but mostly I depend on a bag to have at least two useful inner pockets -- one for a phone and zipped one for loose things like keys, a travel card and lip balm. Still much prefer this than multiple pouches because I can't never decide which pouch should hold what!
