inspiration + wardrobe update // January

i don't know about you, but of all the '90s supers, Christy was always my favorite.

January for me has been about cultivating new habits (i'm studiously avoiding the 'r' word...) and keeping style matters simple.

one of these new habit-goals is working on better ways to deal with stress. so i started yoga again in earnest, and it's amazing how even half an hour a day makes such a big difference. i upgraded my cheap-o mat to a well-made investment one, and got an out-of-print copy of Living Yoga to read along as i get into my practice. beautiful, well-written, inspiring.

sartorially, let's be real: polar vortexes 1 and 2 have made it too damn cold for fashion. style-wise, i've been sticking to a monochrome palette in comfy, sporty silhouettes. new favorite purchase of the month:

P.S.: if you haven't seen the vintage documentary Catwalk, you should. Christy, Naomi, baby Kate and younger, more unfiltered versions of all the big designers are all there.

P.P.S: and because it's Friday, i bring you...the Carlton dance. you're welcome.

what do you do to relieve stress? any new inspirations / additions to your wardrobe lately?

  1. I'm not sure what I need next actually. I am trying to be frugal and practical (moving overseas for grad school in September). I'm always partial to Barbour but its not the easiest to buy since other than the coats you need to call their retail location to see what you can order (no online ordering).
I'm sticking with navy blue, black and similar tones. I really need to find out how to accessorize better!

  2. Carlton dance!!!

I need to get back on the yoga train. I was really good about going twice a week until the studio closed down. As much as I love yoga, nothing clears my head as much as going on long, aimless walks. Leave the apartment with only my keys and just walk for an hour or so.

The first poler vortex was devastating for us. Our pipes froze, my car wouldn't start, public transportation became extremely unreliable, and none of my coats or scarves were warm enough. But then I caved and got a Canada Goose parka and one of those Steven Alan cashmere scarves (additional 40% off sale!) and now I'm braving round two like a boss.

Also, in an attempt to encourage myself to go running more, I got a Nike tech fleece hoodie. Best hoodie ever.

    2. Haha! I got a Nike hoodie too to encourage more running. Is it thick enough for this cold weather? I haven't worn it out yet, so I can still return it. Running is great exercise and extremely cathartic, but I can't bring myself to run more than 4 miles.

    3. @mel - i'm too wimpy to run in these freezing temps! :P

    4. yeah! any recommendations will be great. i like the shiva rea dvds and also had a subscription to yogaglo, but i find that i really need to be in a classroom to force me to make the most of it.

as for the hoodie, it's warm enough on 30-40 degree days since it covers my butt and has a high neck. i usually wear a long sleeve shirt and tank top underneath. these days though, it's just too cold and slushy to do anything. :P

    5. @ jennifer - i just got a few dvds by Tamal Dodge. inexpensive on amazon, really well paced and easy to follow along, and gives a good workout too!

  3. This frigid weather has given me a case of the January sartorial blahs. Lots of woolens from head to toe.

  4. I've been doing yoga on and off since I was in high school (a long time ago now); it's the one type of exercise I stick with. Gonna go do a nice power yoga practice before dinner. :)

  6. Do you have to wear something underneath the everlane boatneck sweatshirt? It looks pretty cropped in the pictures. I'm hesitant to try it for that reason so any reassurance on how to wear appreciated. I was holding out for restocking of the boyfriend version but would love to be convinced to try this one. Thanks!

    1. just depends on your height, but it's versatile enough to layer or wear alone. might do a lookbook post on this soon so stay tuned :)

  7. Morning workout is for me the best way to start the day. I always do a few stretches and cardio for about 15 mn when I'm on schedule. Be safe with round 2 of Polar Vortex!

  8. If you tend to practice at home, you should check out yogaglo.com! Tons of instructional videos from different instructors and it's nice being able to actually see how to do a pose and listen to the instruction rather than having to stop and look at a book. I have to admit I prefer to go to an actual class, but yogaglo is a nice option and way cheaper.

  9. I wonder how the sleeves are in the extra small? I received a small in black last week and don't find it to be quite fitted enough. I am tempted to try the extra small but fear the sleeves will be too short.

  10. Christy is my favourite 90s super too! Love how she always has an air of sweetness and serenity about her.

January has been all about waking up to the fact it's actually 2014 and I feel like I haven't finished what I set out to do last year, haha.I've been living in an ancient pair of black skinny jeans I haven't worn since I graduated from university in 2007 and I'm wondering why I put them away at all.

Hope the yoga is going well! I can't exercise from a video and always need a class full of people to motivate me into moving but I imagine it was a good idea with the crazy cold weather you've been experiencing.

  11. The things I've been doing to relieve stress haven't been very healthy or inspiring, much to my chagrin. 2014 is off to a bad start, but I'm going to try for a re-start this weekend. I usually don't observe the Lunar New Year, but I think I'm going to need it!

Christy looks even better today than she did 20 years ago. One of my favorite supers as well.

  12. Relieving stress has definitely been high on my to do list as well (especially since this is my last semester of college - no second chances this time!). Luckily still being on campus I can integrate stress relief into my day. I signed up for a ballet class two afternoons a week, and while tricky to juggle time wise, I do feel more at ease mentally (especially since this will probably be the last ballet class I ever take, which is a huge change considering I've been doing it since I was 10/11).

Sartorially, I've been trying to "grow up" my wardrobe, especially with the whole entering a new phase of life thing on the horizon. That's included figuring out how to integrate my tastes as they are now into something that says "young adult/professional" instead of "college student," without losing the quirks and eccentricities of my personal style.

  13. Hands down Christy is my favorite 90s super. There's just always been something very wholesome and peaceful about her. I very much like her work with EMC.

Thankfully, I missed Polar Vortex 1 while we were still away on holiday break and part of PV2 while in Paris for work. I refuse to let it get the best of me and have been keeping warm and embracing it with a nicely tailored parka and luxe accessories. I can't stand the cold, but over the years I've amassed a lot of things to keep me warm.

There;'s nothing better than an early AM workout. In the winter it's great for getting warm and starting the day on an energized note. It's also my time to be offline. There's nothing like a good fast paced walk to clear the head. I always feel a sense of clarity after a long walk.

Good luck with the yoga! To relieve stress I always go back to my comfort zone, which is ballet. I do private training with Mary Helen Bowers who is phenomenal and when I want to do something that's no frills I take adult classes at Joffrey.
