it feels very suddenly summer around here: balcony BBQs, the semi-annual Net-a-Porter sale, the Friday afternoon rush in and out of the city. and, rather uncharacteristically, all i want to wear right now are dresses and tropical prints.
an update on things since my last spring/summer wardrobe post.
- crossed off the list: Karen Walker sunnies, finally!
- a wildcard item that wasn't on my list but i really love: this fun hawaiian-print cotton/linen dress.
- been living in slouchy printed pants (will do a post soon on this)
- a festive summery wedding dress...so many of the longer summer dresses out now are too casual/caftan-y/beachy. Zara has some gorgeous lower-priced options, except they're mostly polyester. i may have to go with a silk number.
- can't decide between these elegantly sleek (uptown?) wedge sandals vs these more stylishly utilitarian (brooklyn?) versions.
update: the sleek uptown wedges now on sale here!
I rather like the look of the Silk Waterfall Dress from Madewell

I wish it came in a few more colors though. Those EF wedges are lovely, but I wonder how comfy they would be - any thoughts on the quality of her shoes? She had a pair of oxblood pumps in the fall collection that made me swoon...
i've heard good things about EF shoes, and i love the shape of them - refined and feminine without being too over the top. will def post a review here if i get a pair.
Deletesummer is linen tees and low cut oxfords to me. I just moved from uptown (west side) to brooklyn- so, biased, but go with the apc version :)
ReplyDeleteoh linen tees. i wish zara would reissue their grey ones from last year!
DeleteSounds so ideal. I am so sad to be in the SH where it is miserable and cold, and all I have to look forward to is well.. attempts at veganising comfort food like mac and cheese. That and perhaps wearing all things leather in my wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteI think summer is a time when you can give into uncharacteristic wants like tropical prints in all shapes and forms. As for a maxi style summer dress, if you can wait, RUBY have some absolutely dreamy ones in their Spring Summer collection due out in July, which I think is silk! Customs and taxes though...
yeah i try to avoid ordering int'l - am a bit spoiled in terms of price and shopping options in the US...
DeleteThose trousers look like fun! Summer to me, this time around, is all about ikat textiles, Trinas, and jewelry made of gold, wood, or amber.
ReplyDeletei love ikat but have yet to find a great print this season. love your natural earthy jewelry choices!
DeleteThose sunglasses are amazing! Would love to see a photo of them on you. I bought myself a pair of lightweight slouchy printed pants and my husband laughs hysterically at me every time I wear them. Guatemalan clown pants, he says. No matter, I don't mind spreading joy like that through my sartorial choices ;) I haven't made any summer purchases yet, but I have pulled out all my cropped jeans, and that little flash of ankle definitely marks the beginning of a new season.

your husband's just jealous - printed slouchy pants are indispensable for summer!
Deletei've really been liking that hawaiian print dress, too!
ReplyDeleteit's chilly here in toronto. i'm wearing a down vest and a flannel shirt today. summer means shorts, saltwater sandals, and a button up shirt since i spend most of my time in the sandbox with the kids.
i am totally in a hawaiian print mood these days. hope it's warmed up in toronto.
DeleteI've been dying for a pair of Karen Walkers, too! Congrats on taking the plunge!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
La Petite Gigi
I really like your purchases and vote for the APC wedges, mine in black from a few seasons ago are so comfortable but they have stretched :-(
ReplyDeleteFor me being able to go bared legged is one of the things I love best about Summer. My favourites are easy jersey or shirt dresses in cottons/linen/silk and skirt outfits.
i totally understand the impulse for wildcard prints - i would like to find something perfect in ikat or ikat inspired, but have yet to see something that rings all the right bells.
ReplyDeletewhen the weather gets blazing hot i like pale hues - khaki, ivory, white, washed denim. i really crave a panama hat for my holiday in july and am thinking of ordering the one from j crew after all because it's the only one i've seen made of straw (a lot of hats turn out to be 100% paper).
my vote goes to the apc ones as well but the EF ones have more potential for dressier occasions.
are many hats really made out of paper? :P also, good ikat is hard to find. i have a feeling Ammu is having the best luck with this.
Delete:) access to textiles has to be one of the great positives of living in India. I struggled to find decent ikat clothing when I lived in London but Delhi has been fantastic on that account. You two have to plan a visit!
DeleteI love your list! I have been thinking more about cotton sweat pants and dresses. My third pair of Trinas in silver/white just arrived!
ReplyDeletehaha, aren't you glad you discovered them? such a fine staple.
DeleteI too am ;looking for stuff to wear to a wedding. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteMy summer essentials are Ray Ban Clubmasters, pale denim and worn brown leather.
Look forward to a post on slouchy pants. This is the one elusive item I can't find anywhere, mostly because the cuts, thus far, never work for me. But once it gets really hot, the jeans are gonna have to go, so I'm hoping to find something before too long. I feel like I am looking for the sort of thick, worn cotton preppy roll up pants that I used to wear as a kid, but everything is so cheap and ill-made these days. Stuff that's not "Dry Clean Only" would be great if you have recommendations there. The whole dry cleaning thing drives me crazy -- I can understand once in awhile, but does anybody seriously dry clean their everyday clothing anymore? To me that is just an expensive and overly complicated proposition! Also, would love to know your opinion on fabrics such as lyocell, as there seems to be a lot of this out there.
ReplyDeletecheck out my latest post! :) am totally with you on the low-maintenance factor for summer pants.
Deletei think you're right about the wedges. hmmmm :) we shall see...
ReplyDeleteI love how NYC turns into a completely different city when the weather is beautiful. Nothing says summer for me like my tennis whites. I can't wait to play regularly again.
